A trip to Jaipur : MozStumbler v1.0

I have been on many trips, but this one is very special to me, as it marked many 'firsts' in my life. This was :
  • My first trip to Jaipur ( and Rajasthan )
  • My first MozStumbler trip
  • My first outing with the Mozilla Delhi Members ( MozPacers )
Let me try to summarize this amazing journey, as best as I can.

The trip began late at night at around 4:30 am. Our travel vehicle, the MozBus, picked up all members from ISBT bus depot ( near Kashmere Gate ). Since, I live in South Delhi, I took an auto to Dhaula Kuan, from where the MozBus picked me up.

We left Delhi at around 5:00 am. On board the bus, I was glad to see the community leads, from the Mozilla Delhi Community : Anup Kumar Mishra, Ajay Singhi and Bhuvnesh Dogra. I also met, many of my fellow Mozilla Delhi Contributors.

At the beginning of the trip all the members were informed that this trip, was also a competition to see who can collect most points, by stumbling throughout the trip. It was also declared, that the winner of this competition, would get a Mozilla Stumbler T-shirt !! . Click here to know more about Mozilla Location Services and Stumbling.

Our first stop was a restaurant on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, where all of us had tea/coffee and some snacks. Also, by then, every member had started stumbling and collecting points using the Mozilla Stumbler App, on their android smart phones.

We reached Jaipur at around 12:00 pm. Traveling through the by-lanes of the pink city, we arrived at our temporary home in Jaipur i.e. Hotel Mansingh.

As you might have guessed, all of us wanted to relax a bit, before moving ahead. After about an hour all of us met, at the reception area of the hotel, where we planned to visit Jantar Mantar and Nahargarh Fort.

Jantar MantarJantar Mantar is actually, an old astronomic calculation lab, with many huge measurement instruments. All of us were amazed to see the, huge structures which were used for astronomic calculations, in a foregone era. After exploring this place and clicking many pics, just as we began to leave, it started raining, and all of us ran towards our MozBus.

Leaving the rains and the huge instruments behind, we arrived at the Nahargarh Fort. The most striking thing about this fort, to me, was it's location and architecture. Located on the edge of the Aravali Hills, this fort has an amazing view of the the complete Jaipur city, and the hills surrounding it.

We returned back to our hotel, in the evening and had amazing dinner. After dinner, all contributors were called in for a short meeting, where all of us discussed the current status and future plans regarding the Mozilla Delhi Community Website. It was decided that, we will adopt an aggressive approach, to complete this project in the Dev Sprint 2.0 .

Amer Fort

The next day all of us, boarded the MozBus and took off in the direction of the famous, Amer Fort ( this is where many scenes from the movie Jodha Akbar were shot !! ). We took a jeep up-to the Chand Pol ( Moon Gate ), and entered the Jaleb Chowk. Here we decided to hire a guide, as this vast fort has many interesting areas, and related stories.

One of things, which I found be very interesting about this place, is that it had a secret underground tunnel, which connected it to the Jaigarh Fort !! This fort also has : a mirror palace which can be lit up using a single candle,  an age old air conditioning system and much more.

After visiting each part of the fort and clicking group pics and selfies to our heart's content, we said goodbye to Amer Fort and Jaipur. On the way back, we played many card games ( Bluff is the best !! ), truth and dare ( many secrets revealed ) and had loads of fun. We did all this and more, while stumbling and collecting location data using the Stumbler App

By the end of our journey, we had, collected many memorable moments, made awesome new friends, visited amazing places and also stumbled throughout Jaipur.

The learn Vim project - Part 1

Over the course of my programming years, I have come to absolutely love Vim. Vim IMHO, is one of the most efficient, fast, and reliable ways to edit any kind of text whatsoever. Many people won't agree with me, but let's not start the IDE/tool wars right away.  In my mind, if notepad is an old Nokia phone, and Sublime text is the iPhone, Vim would be the PDA that Spy-Kids had on their wrists. The skill of Storytelling

Stories have acted as a mechanism of transferring learned experiences with other human beings within small tribes,since our hunter-gatherer years.  Even before we had written communication mechanisms, such as books, ( or even paper for that matter ), all human tribes were communicating their ideas, through story-telling. It would be a fair assumption to make, that all these stories were generally used by the senior members of a tribe, to educate the young and bright minds, who were just starting their journey as a tribe member. Since, oral communication was the norm, oratory skills must have been the key differentiator, between charming leader, and the other senior members of the tribe. Good storytelling has been the key tool in a leaders toolkit, for as long as human tribes have existed.
